The Short- and Long-Term Ramifications of a Burn Injury

A serious burn can impact virtually all aspects of your life from day one. In the short term, burns have the potential to cause intense pain, and they pose the risk of life-threatening complications as they heal.

People with burns are especially vulnerable to infections if bacteria enter their bloodstream through broken skin, which can potentially cause sepsis. Other complications that can arise in the immediate aftermath or over the weeks that follow include:

  • Fluid loss and low blood volume;

  • Low body temperature;

  • Difficulty breathing because of smoke inhalation;

  • Scarring and disfigurement; and

  • Bone and joint issues caused by the tightening of skin, muscles, and tendons.

Unfortunately, the challenges don’t stop when the patient is released from the hospital. Depending on the severity and location of the burn, the victim’s mobility may be limited. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, and other kinds of rehabilitation may be necessary, but they might not be able to restore the person’s full range of motion or functioning. The injured party may or may not be able to return to work.

The physical impact of serious burn injuries is utterly devastating, but it is only half the battle. Injured parties also have to contend with the emotional effects of the accident. Scarring and disfigurement will serve as a permanent reminder of the trauma they have endured, which can make it hard to overcome any fear, stress, or anxiety stemming from the incident.

Post-traumatic stress disorder is common among burn victims, as is low self-esteem. Everyone deserves to feel beautiful in their own skin, but scarring often prevents injured parties from feeling confident. Low self-esteem may not seem all that significant, but it can affect every aspect of your life, from your personal relationships to your professional career.
